History of Witches
The history of witches is as varied as the many cultures that acknowledge their existence.  The definitions may vary slightly but the end result is almost always the same:  witches are people that have unusual powers and should be feared.

The historical background of witches in the United States really begins with the Salem witch trial.  During the infancy of the colonies, the town of Salem, Massachusetts experienced some unusual behavior in some of the town's influential citizens children.  As many know, the children blamed a slave, Tituba, for casting spells and causing witches to bother them in their sleep each night.

The Christian town decided quickly that it was their duty to root out the evil that had taken over their town and they did so by threatening, torturing and hanging over a dozen of Salem's citizens.  Sadly, the children's hysterics fanned the flames of mass hysteria and it took months for the fire to burn out.  When all was said and done, many had lost their lives due to the heresay of a child "under a spell."
