Famous Witches
Being a famous witch may not have many advantages, especially if you were one of those persecuted, but remembered through history as being horrendously tortured or murdered. In humanities quest for rooting out evil in society, there have been several misguided attempts at eradicating certain members of society who don't follow the norms and morays of the majority. Witches throughout history have been singled out in particular. Fear of the unknown is one of the biggest reasons for persecuting the practitioners. Other reasons include quests for religious domination and of course, the root of much evil, money.
